Photo by Lt. ![]() The battleship Nevada fired the first shots at D-Day after recovering from serious damage at Pearl Harbor, when she was the only ship to get under way. This is the second of a two-part essay on the dramatic history of the battleship USS Nevada (BB-36), which survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and went on to serve in the Aleutians, Atlantic convoy escort duty, the Allied liberation of Normandy and southern France, and the climactic battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
